Janki Devi Memorial College was founded in 1959 by the famous Gandhian Shri. Brij Krishan Chandiwala in memory of his mother Smt. Janki Devi. It is one of the most distinctive institutions of the University of Delhi with the aim to provide quality education to young women and empower them to become economically self- reliant, confident individuals, ready to face challenges of society and contribute meaningfully to the world at large. With its lush green lawns and imposing building, the college is like an oasis in the midst of a busy commercial area.
The college offers education in Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Mathematics and Commerce. With an eye towards future employability, the college also offers short-term, add-on and certificate courses such as Computerized Accounting Software- Tally ERP 9 by the Department of Commerce, Certified Capital Market Professional and Unlocking Development Finance by the Department of Economics, Travel and Tourism by the Department of History in collaboration with the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension(DACEE), a Yoga Certificate Course by the Department of Philosophy launched with Certification form the Ministry of Ayush, and so on. In addition to the above, the Janki Devi Vocational Centre offers full and part time courses such as Home Management, Cookery, Textile, Fashion Designing and Commercial Art. The college also has a Career Counselling Cell which is committed to providing placements and internships to JDMC students.
JDMC has a a well-equipped and well stocked library with Internet access provided to all users as well as Braille books, talking books and screen reading software NVD for visually challenged users.
The college is run by a well- regulated administration and offers excellent facilities and infrastructure for the pursuit of academic and extra-curricular activities. It has a well-designed office block, a union room, a beautiful common room, a clean and spacious medical room with such facilities as a sanitary napkin vending machine, photo-copying facilities, a comfortable staff room, individual departmental rooms, seminar hall, committee room, computer labs, the sports infrastructure, a large and modern cafeteria and an open air auditorium, and two research rooms for teachers. It also provides a disabled friendly environment, with ramps, toilets and lift that cater to specific needs as well as an assistance system for the visually challenged students’ and faculty. We have Braille signage as well as tactile surfaces present all along the college.
The college gardens receive high praise from all visitors. They are a sight for sore eyes and they regularly win prizes and awards at the most prestigious Flower Shows and Garden competitions held by the University.
The Krishna hostel which was inaugurated in 2018 by the Hon’ble Former President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, has a capacity to house 105 outstation students.
The college is concerned about not just the intellectual and academic growth of its students but also takes care in enhancing all other student abilities that will make them well-rounded individuals. The Women’s Development Centre, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme and the Gandhi Study Circle provide an opportunity to our students to engage with social issues like legal literacy, women’s health and empowerment and adult education. Other extra-curricular and co-curricular activities including drama, debate, dance, music, quizzing, and art are promoted through clubs and societies that undertake events and shows, the year round.
Regular remedial classes are held for students who face academic challenges and economically challenged students benefit greatly through measures taken by the Equal Opportunities Cell such as free meals for the students.
Sports is big at JDMC. The Physical Education Department is extremely active and provides training in sports such as basketball, hockey, gymnastics, handball, volleyball, judo and karate. It won the award for Best College in Football (women) by Football Delhi.
Research is carried out by teachers and students, often jointly with teacher mentored projects by students, and new faculty research projects taken up every year.
The college makes great efforts to take care of the mental well-being of its students by providing dedicated counselling services through a part time counsellor as well as dedicated workshops for counselling students every month by Zyego, a wellness agency.
